Free, short term, practical and emotional support in the home

Help at Home offers practical help

We help:

  • Patients returning home from hospital
  • People who are unwell or have a crisis at home
  • Someone that just needs a bit of help with one off tasks in order to remain at home.

This service is for anyone over the age of 18 and is provided by volunteers who are trained, police checked and carry an identity badge.

We can help with:

  • Checking you are ok
  • Collecting prescriptions
  • Light housework (on a temporary basis)
  • Light gardening
  • Being a listening ear and having a friendly chat
  • Accompanying you on a walk
  • Tasks in the house or garden
  • Shopping for essentials
  • Posting letters and filling in forms
  • Preparing some food or drink

Volunteers typically visit for around 3 weeks and make 6 or 7 visits during that time.

We can also put you in touch with other services such as meals on wheels, public and other voluntary services, mobile wardens schemes and a range of other local community groups.

If what you need isn’t in the above list, please ask, we will do our very best to help or find the help you need!  If you need help or know someone that needs help- contact your district coordinator now.

We don't replace statutory services or offer services available elsewhere.

“I'm so grateful to you as I was in so much pain at the time and I didn't know who to turn to.  I really don't know who I'd have turned to… I am very, very grateful.  You really have made such a big difference to my life.”

“I don't know what I would have done without you as I don't have any family up here and only one or two friends around”

“I enjoyed the volunteer’s visits as she was always so cheerful.  It was very nice to have her company”
